Public Relations and Public Schools

PR is used by politicians, celebrities, businesses, and almost everyone in the public eye or needs to be in the public eye. Do public schools need the same type of PR?
Advertisements at the local movie theaters in between shows.
Advertisements on bill boards on the highways.
Advertisements on local cable stations.
Advertisements on radio.
Advertisements at malls.
Advertisements on Face Book and Youtube
And if PR is needed where , when , how much, and who should be responsible for it?

  1. Self promotion is a idea that I am not comfortable with but promoting a school that does a great job seems important and rational.I used to have an administrator that said 'Toot your own horn" during evaluations. My comment was 'I am being evalualted , evaluations are your job, you should know what I have been doing. Now I see that everyone is not watching closely and 'tooting your own horn' is a necessity in many cases. So public schools should 'toot away'. Hopefully the Supt. is watching closely and leading the parade but if not the 'tooting' needs to follow the ladder down.

  2. Promoting good things happening at a school shapes public impressions of a school. With the newspapers front page articles about school violence and low graduation rates the other side of the teeter totter needs to pull down. If the school does not promote itself who will. Negative PR is out there everywhere lets promote the positive so everyone notices what is good about education.
