26 Random Acts of Kindness

I have started on my 26 Random Acts of Kindness in honor and remembrance of the 26 innocent lives lost in the Connecticut school shooting.  I was made aware of this idea from my daughter who also is working on her 26 acts of kindness.  I am on number 4.  I would challenge everyone who needs to make a New Years Resolution to complete 26 Random Acts of Kindness .  Just think if everyone did that.  What a wonderful year it will be and what a great way to honor those children and adults in Connecticut.

  1. I am rethinking the idea of Random Acts of Kindness and Rachel's Promise. I have been doing things for people for the random acts of kindness. Opening doors, paying ahead, pushing carts etc. Good things I know but... Had a student give me a gift, it was a left over gift but she took the time to wrap it and give it to me. I told her how great it smelled and thanks so much. He act of kindness to me and my act of kindness back to her... simple kind words and attention, my entire attention. It should not take a gift or doing an act. How many people just need undivided attention , just for a while. Just like Rachels promise promotes. So now along with 26 random acts of kindness I will focus on undivided attention, even when i don't have enought time, and especially when I don't have time. Just think if everyone did that what a change in the world it could become.

  2. I am on 11 of my 26 random acts of kindness. I could talk about each one but I think that competes with the entire idea and process. I will say that sometimes we think that random acts of kindness should be directed to those in need of help. I agree that is what I was focusing on until yesterday. Yesterday I completed a random act of kindness for someone who outwardly looked liked they did not need it. I was glad I did. Who really knows who needs a kind act, I think and know everyone does at one time or another. Kindness is for everyone and should be shared with all. It is not a charity that should be decided who receives it that is not true kindness.

  3. Have stopped counting how many random acts of kindness, just do them. If recognition was a goal then I would not do them. I will give some ideas that have been worth while for me.
Give snacks to Salvation Army bell ringers and tell them thanks for volunteering, after you give a donation.
Give homemade cookies to a homeless shelter with the ingredients listed so they can see if everyone can eat them.
Buy white socks for homeless shelters.
Donate art journals and pencils to homeless shelters.
Give Wal Mart gift cards to a high school to give to students in need.

So now your turn...what ideas do you have for random acts of kindness?
